Smoke alarm laws have changed. Staying legal is fast and easy!
State Legislation Queensland – IMPORTANT
Rental properties and related electrical work are needed to be updated by 1st January 2022. Compliance of the smoke alarms are the types of smoke alarms and smoke alarm installations, build dates, including dates of significant renovations, and building classes. This is to ensure compliance of the smoke alarms, types of smoke alarms and smoke alarm installations all comply to the new legislation.
This is all due to the current legislative requirements stipulated by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Act 1990; Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008; and the Electrical Safety Act 2002 applicable to existent (pre-2022) smoke alarms and smoke alarm installations and related electrical work (if applicable).
Dwellings – houses, townhouses (Class 1A) and units (Class 2).
Photoelectric – the method the device uses to detect smoke.
Interconnected – Interconnection can be wired or wireless, but when the when one alarms sounds all do as well.
Substantial – total building works equals 50% of the dwelling over 3 years.
Hardwired / DC – connected to the electricity supply.
Battery / AC – powered solely by battery, usually 10 year lifetime.
